A warm sunny day at Liverpool college, an excited buzz hangs in the air. The type of energy that can only be associated with the start of a fresh season. New and returning faces in the changing room. Ben Ashford transferring in from Lymm to bolster the attacking line. Jacob Morton back from his trip down under is back to be the lynchpin in the screen. Suliamaan Ahmed has finally redonned the jersey. The resplendent reds took to the field after a tactical talk from coach, Mike Power.
First half started well, Urmston controlled the ball well around the back and created some threatening looks through the middle. Sefton ran quick diagonal lines across their forwards to play a hard line ball. Following one of these balls, Michael Tonge found himself working back to make the tackle. A few mistimed jabs in a row gave the opposition a penalty corner. A solid drag flick to the bottom right, flicking up off the toe of Josh Edwards between the sticks and over the stick of Andrew Wilson on the post. 1-0 Sefton.
Keeping heads high. Sean Barrett played some good link up play with the back line and reds transferred the ball nicely with Iain Lawrence and Aaron Kelly on the width. Sustained composure and some gaps opened up. Wilson with a nice aerial over the Sefton midfield to an open Tim Querlioz. Turning towards the shooting circle Tim played a nice ball to an open Andrew Power. Taking the ball in his wily clutches he opened up the reverse stick and hammered one home. 1-1 Urmston score.
Pressure from Urmston continued and the ball played through some solid channels. Chris Martin and Martin Stonehouse rotating on to cause fresh problems to Sefton. Soon, Sean found himself carrying well in a threatening position towards the Sefton D. A great third man run from Sully behind the defensive line. Weighted through ball on the point. Sully takes it round the hopeless and scrambling keeper to bury it. 2-1 Urmston take the lead.
Half time.
Urmston continued to hold the ball well as the on pitch temperature rose. In more ways than one! The legs started to fade. Urmston win a short corner after a good run from Ben Ashford and Tongy down the left. Tucked away with a swift flick of the wrists. The classic technique of the Andy Power drag flick. 3-1 Urmston.
Another Urmston short corner. Injection off the mark. Good recovery play. Tongy shoots wide but an incredible deflection from Iain Lawrence slots the ball between the posts. Should be Urmston 4-1 but the umpires stop the game to discuss. Goal overturned for hitting an Urmston foot.
Sefton start getting into the game a bit more. Playing some dangerous passes across the D. Edwards controlled his D and the defence well. Urmston hold them out with relative composure.
Following one of their breaks down the right hand side. Ben saw an option for a big chop across the Sefton player. Textbook forward tackling. Textbook green card.
With the game looking over and Urmston on course for the first points of the season. A loose pass from Sean Barrett and Sefton make a last ditch offensive play. Direct ball through the middle. Aaron misses it. Iain let's it bobble through him. Sefton take a consolation goal. 3-2 Sefton score.
Game over 5s later. Urmston take the win and a well earned first points of the season with a close finish.
